For students to learn they need a teacher who has a plan, the resources needed to execute that plan, and the persistence to follow through on their plan no matter how many educational obstacles they encounter along the way. Too many teachers have settled into a routine which makes teaching as easy as possible for them and hopefully the children learn something too! However, education does not start in the classroom...

It starts in the living room, and in the kitchen, and the nursery. Parents need to realize the impact they have during the early years of their child's life and how they effect their child's ability to learn in the future. Education starts at birth and does not stop until the grave. Children are always learning, the question is; "What are they being taught?" Are they learning to discuss picture and read some of the words in their books, or are they learning to change channels on the electronic babysitter? Are they learning to count to ten and spell words, or are they learning the words to the latest rap song? Are parents engaging their children in intellectually stimulating discussions or are they laughing at how cute it is when their 3-year old says their first curse word? Too many parents have dumped the responsibility to educate their children on local schools and therefore bear as much responsibility as the educational system for the failure of their children...
