The girl is taught to be silent and, essentially, invisible. She should be seen rather than heard and kept out of sight unless otherwise beckoned.
The question that the reader is left with, however, is how does this affect the girl? Does she grow up to be the shy, timid woman that her mother is clearly pruning her to be or does she come into her own and recognize that silence is the most powerful weapon anyone can use against another person? Does she grow to see that by being silent, she gives those around her power? Or does she simply let them lord that over her? Hopefully, her worldviews stray desperately from that which her mother taught her through this doll and she realizes that it is alright for her to voice her opinions...
