Homer was a historian who was intimately familiar with Troy and the Trojan War. This is evidenced through the following passage:

Dust rose as he was dragg’d, and his black hair

Trail’d out behind: his head dragg’d in the dirt,

That lovely head: now Zeus to his enemies

Gave him, to be defiled in his own land...

Clearly Homer had knowledge of both. As an artist though, Homer most certainly took an element of poetic license in the creation of this master work. No doubt the ancient Mycenaean People influenced him through their advanced culture, economic system, and warlike nature.
