It was later in 1917, whilst still writing poetry; Owen went to the front as an officer as a Second Lieutenant and platoon leader in the Manchester Regiment (BBC 2005: 1). Immediately he was placed right in the thick of it with he and his men, being ordered to occupy two German dugouts. This experience took place over fifty hours in a muddy hole, knee deep in stinking water and had such a profound affect on him that he felt compelled to write about it in poetry-poetry, which was factual, unrelenting and harsh (BBC 2005:1)...
