Upon their arrival, one of the townspeople, Sherburn, shoots another, Boggs, for drunkenly threatening him. The rest of the people in the town form a mob outside of Sherburnâs house attempting to capture and lynch him for what he had done. Rather than hiding, Sherburn steps out on to his balcony and shouts down to the angry mob:
