As for finding patterns, I basically played around with the numbers. I attempted squaring, multiplying, dividing, and adding x. I finally got the right formula. I attempted finding something within the pies within themselves, like whether a vertical or horizontal line made a difference at times, or how small or big the cuts are...

When I first looked at this problem I thought it'd be fun, but then I realized that cutting pies made me hungry?I'm joking. I found this POW to be quite a handful.
